Nessmuk Knife by Daniel Koster

The name "Nessmuk" comes from an avid outdoor sports write named George W. Sears. He wrote many outdoors canoeing and ultralight camping articles for magazines under that pen name.

He wrote about the "perfect knife kit" for outdoors use. It consisted of a skinning knife, a double-bladed folding knife and a double-bit belt axe. Like this:

Like the infamous Bowie knife, the "Nessmuk" knife has taken on many other shapes since the drawing above was published. After seeing these knives by Tai Goo:

I decided to bring the two together for my take on the Nessmuk design.

My goals for my Nessmuk are this:

Efficiency in the kitchen
Utility for hunting/skinning
Toughness in camp duty / chopping

My first nessmuk was created with the help from the kind folks over at Ramanon Forum. After a few prototypes worked the bugs out, I settled on the designs you see below. I also decided to offer the same pattern in a variety of materials as well as grinds - for specialized tasks and general use too.

Specs: 9.5" overall
5.25" blade

After a few rounds of nessmuks, I started to get requests for a larger version. So I set out to create a nessmuk large enough for heavy camp use. I call it the

Monster Nessie

I typically make these from 1/4" thick 5160 spring steel.
